Foster Corporation recently entered into a license-based partnership agreement with Bioenvision LLC to exclusively market their Oligon¿ antimicrobial technology to the medical device market on a worldwide basis.
Oligon Antimicrobial Technology is a novel iontopheretic silver based antimicrobial technology that incorporates silver, platinum, and carbon black as its main constituents. Antimicrobial activity is electrically activated by means of an oxidation-reduction reaction of silver and platinum that releases silver ions. When the composite material is placed in contact with an electrolyte fluid such as blood, saline, urine, or drug preparations, the metal powders become an array of small electrodes. Each metal powder in contact with the electrolytic fluid becomes an anode or cathode. The carbon black serves to prevent charge build-up on the metal powders, there-by providing a long lasting and consistent silver ion release.
Oligon technology provides a safe, effective, and consistent protection from gram negative and gram positive bacteria and fungus colonization. The antimicrobial can be incorporated into a wide array of polymers, including thermoplastic polyurethane.
