Putnam, CT (June 2004) - Foster Corporation announces the completion of its advanced clean room polymer compounding operation within the company's new 45,000 sq. ft. biomedical research and compounding facility. This dedicated operation was specifically designed to support challenging market requirements resulting from the convergence of medical device and pharmaceutical technologies.
As a leader in biomedical material solutions since 1989, Foster has established a tradition of anticipating market demands by adding material development capabilities for leading medical device companies. Continuing this tradition, Foster has invested in a dedicated 900 sq. ft., class 100,000 polymer compounding operation. This facility includes quartz/epoxy seamless floors, a dedicated fume and dust collection system, interlock pass-through for materials, and a gowning room for personnel.
Temperature controls of °F and humidity controls maintain a constant operating environment at all times.Compounding within the clean room is performed by a Leistritz ZSE-27mm twin screw extruder that incorporates GMP design for the medical and pharmaceutical applications. This dedicated extruder includes a processing system that is fully capable of monitoring all important parameters of the extrusion line. Extremely accurate feeding systems ensure constant feed streams and make monitoring simple as the extrusion line runs continuously.
According to Foster's VP and Chief Operations Officer, Ken Pickering, We believe drug coated stents and transdermal wound care represent only the beginning of a convergence between device and drug applications, which will require more precise and cleaner material manufacturing. This investment allows us to continue supporting the advanced requirements of our customers and provide unique material solutions for the most demanding biomedical applications.
Foster Corporation is a global market leader in design, development and delivery of specialty thermoplastic solutions for biomedical markets. The company also provides a broad range of material, process and design contract engineering services for these target markets.
